Headshot Makeup: Actor, Executive and Personal-Brand Differences
"Headshot makeup" sounds like one service. It's three, and mixing them up costs people jobs. Having photographed thousands of headshots and designed the makeup for them, here's how the briefs genuinely differ.
The actor
Casting directors need to see the person who will walk into the room — on a Tuesday, without a glam team. Actor headshot makeup is therefore radical honesty with the volume gently adjusted: even the skin without erasing its character, keep texture and every distinguishing feature, open the eyes, and stop. Overdone makeup in an actor's headshot creates a credibility gap at the audition, and casting notices instantly.
The executive
An executive portrait is an authority document. It lives on the company site, the conference program, the acquisition announcement. The brief is polish with restraint: fatigue removed, skin evened, shine controlled — but nothing that reads as styled. For men this is grooming, full stop: undetectable correction that makes the difference between "tired" and "trustworthy." For women, typically a refined natural look that will still feel right when the photo is on screen behind them at a keynote.
The personal brand
Founders, authors, coaches and creators need images that survive being blown up on a website hero, cropped for a podcast thumbnail and compressed by every social platform. That argues for slightly stronger definition than an actor's shot — features that hold at small sizes and heavy compression — plus a look consistent enough to repeat across the shoot's multiple outfits and setups.
One constant: high resolution is watching
Across all three, modern cameras resolve everything. Heavy base, harsh contour and shadow-casting lashes fail at 60 megapixels regardless of brief. The craft is subtractive — and the retoucher should be finishing skin lightly, not rebuilding it. Makeup, lighting and retouching each have a job; the results are best when nobody's doing anyone else's.
